H. H. Swami Sivananda Saraswati ji Maharaj

Swami Sivananda Saraswati (1887-1963) was an Indian spiritual leader and founder of the Divine Life Society. He was a physician by profession and a disciple of the famous yogi, Swami Vishwananda Saraswati.

Swami Sivananda was born in Tamil Nadu, India in 1887. He initially pursued a career in medicine, studying in Malaysia and working as a doctor in Singapore. However, he soon realized that his true calling was spirituality and renounced his medical career to become a wandering ascetic.

He spent several years traveling throughout India, studying yoga, Vedanta, and other spiritual traditions. He eventually settled in Rishikesh, a town in the Himalayan foothills known for its spiritual significance, and established the Divine Life Society in 1936.

The Divine Life Society is a spiritual organization that aims to promote spiritual knowledge and service to humanity. It has branches throughout India and in other countries, and has published a large number of books on yoga, Vedanta, and other spiritual topics.

Swami Sivananda was known for his emphasis on the importance of daily spiritual practice and service to others. H. H. Swami Chidananda Saraswatiji Maharaj

Swami Chidananda Saraswati (1916-2008) was an Indian spiritual leader and disciple of Swami Sivananda Saraswati. He served as the President of the Divine Life Society from 1963 until his passing in 2008.

Born as Sridhar Rao in South India, Swami Chidananda studied in Mumbai and obtained a degree in law. However, he was drawn to spirituality and renounced his career as a lawyer to become a disciple of Swami Sivananda in 1943. He spent the next several years serving at the Divine Life Society’s headquarters in Rishikesh, learning and practicing yoga, Vedanta, and other spiritual disciplines.

In 1950, Swami Chidananda was initiated into the monastic order and given the name Swami Chidananda Saraswati. He was appointed as the General Secretary of the Divine Life Society in 1952 and became its President in 1963 after the passing of Swami Sivananda.

As the President of the Divine Life Society, Swami Chidananda continued the work of his guru by promoting spiritual knowledge and service to humanity. He was known for his emphasis on the practical application of spiritual teachings in daily life, and for his compassion and concern for all beings.

Swami Chidananda was a prolific writer and authored numerous books and articles on yoga, Vedanta, and other spiritual topics. His writings reflect his deep insight and understanding of the human condition, and offer practical guidance for spiritual seekers.
